An Eternity

An eternity of collapsible breaths,
equal to ephemeral sighs of damnation.
Commit to memory each inexhaustible sin,
then expertly deny it.
Only we knew every secret and still
we chose the dream over the lie.
For once, a spark that wasn’t supposed to fade.

Always hot, looking for
the flame, the fortress, the fortitude of solace
and of an evening’s company.
But at the finish line, none of it should matter.

We slipped the key of envy and personal affliction
discreetly into the other’s pockets –
a mind full of absorbed regret seemed good enough.

Ill-fated proxies watched us make love by
teleportation, joined our constant hunt for
new leaves and trees to burn with the insatiable desire
that salts our skin.

Somehow,
I knew this would break us.

About the poet:

I am currently a third year Literature student at Oklahoma State University. After living and working in Kuwait for four years, I decided to come back home to experience provincial life once again. Eventually, I'd like to travel more - Hawaii sounds like a great place to settle once I graduate.
